How to Make a Classic Tiramisu: A Decadent Italian Dessert

Tiramisu is a classic Italian dessert known for its rich layers of coffee-soaked ladyfingers, mascarpone cream, and a dusting of cocoa powder. Its delightful combination of flavors makes it a favorite at family gatherings, special occasions, and dinner parties. If you’ve always wanted to make tiramisu at home, we’ve got you covered! In this article, we’ll walk you through the steps to create a traditional, delicious tiramisu.

1. Gather the Ingredients

Tiramisu requires just a few simple ingredients, but the key to success lies in using high-quality items. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 6 large egg yolks
  • 3/4 cup (150g) granulated sugar
  • 1 1/4 cups (300ml) heavy cream
  • 1 1/2 cups (340g) mascarpone cheese
  • 1 cup (240ml) strong brewed coffee (cooled)
  • 1/4 cup (60ml) coffee liqueur (optional)
  • 1 package of ladyfingers (savoiardi biscuits)
  • Unsweetened cocoa powder (for dusting)
  • Dark chocolate shavings (optional)

Tip: For the coffee, use freshly brewed espresso or strong coffee. If you prefer a non-alcoholic version, skip the coffee liqueur, but it does add depth to the flavor.

2. Prepare the Coffee and Liqueur

Start by brewing a strong cup of coffee. You’ll need about 1 cup of coffee for the recipe. Once brewed, let it cool to room temperature. If you’re using coffee liqueur, mix it with the coffee at this point.

Tip: For an even richer tiramisu, you can use espresso instead of regular coffee. The more intense the coffee flavor, the better!

3. Make the Mascarpone Cream

In a large bowl, whisk together the egg yolks and sugar until the mixture becomes thick and pale. You can use a hand whisk or an electric mixer for this step. The egg mixture should have a smooth, creamy texture.

Tip: If you’re concerned about using raw eggs, you can cook the egg yolks by placing the bowl over a double boiler and whisking constantly until the mixture reaches 160°F (71°C).

Once the egg mixture is ready, gently fold in the mascarpone cheese until fully incorporated and smooth.

4. Whip the Heavy Cream

In a separate bowl, whip the heavy cream until stiff peaks form. This step is crucial for achieving the light, airy texture of tiramisu. You can use an electric mixer or a hand whisk for this.

Tip: Be careful not to overwhip the cream, as this will cause it to turn into butter and affect the texture of your tiramisu.

5. Combine the Mascarpone Cream and Whipped Cream

Gently fold the whipped cream into the mascarpone mixture. Be careful not to deflate the whipped cream — the goal is to keep the mixture light and fluffy.

Tip: Use a rubber spatula for folding the cream into the mascarpone. It helps maintain the airy texture and ensures everything is evenly mixed.

6. Assemble the Tiramisu

Now it’s time to assemble your tiramisu. Quickly dip the ladyfingers one by one into the cooled coffee (and liqueur, if using), making sure not to soak them too much — they should be moist, not soggy.

Tip: Don’t dip the ladyfingers for too long. A quick dip is enough to absorb the coffee flavor while maintaining their structure.

Layer the dipped ladyfingers in the bottom of a 9×9-inch dish or a similar-sized serving dish. Spread half of the mascarpone cream mixture over the ladyfingers, smoothing it into an even layer.

Tip: You can also use individual glasses for individual servings of tiramisu, which gives a more elegant presentation.

7. Add the Second Layer

Once the first layer is complete, repeat the process with another layer of dipped ladyfingers and the remaining mascarpone cream. Make sure the top layer is smooth and even.

Tip: Press down lightly on the layers to help them settle, but avoid packing them too tightly.

8. Chill the Tiramisu

Cover the tiramisu with plastic wrap and refrigerate it for at least 4 hours, preferably overnight. Chilling the tiramisu allows the flavors to meld together and gives the dessert time to set properly.

Tip: The longer you refrigerate the tiramisu, the better the flavors will develop. If you have the time, let it sit overnight for the best taste and texture.

9. Garnish and Serve

Before serving, dust the top of the tiramisu with a generous layer of unsweetened cocoa powder. For an extra touch of elegance, you can also add dark chocolate shavings or cocoa nibs on top.

Tip: If you don’t have a sifter, you can use a fine mesh strainer to evenly dust the cocoa powder over the tiramisu.

10. Enjoy!

Tiramisu is best served chilled and can be enjoyed immediately after garnishing. The creamy texture, combined with the rich coffee flavor and light ladyfingers, makes this dessert a crowd favorite.

Tip: For a unique twist, try using different liqueurs like Amaretto or Kahlúa in place of coffee liqueur for a different flavor profile.
